Natural Cures for Anxiety

If you're interested in natural cures for anxiety, congratulations! In my
opinion, too many people in our society look for the answer to all their problems in a bottle of pills. While
I won't say that medication doesn't have its place, I do think that there are a lot of natural anxiety
cures that can help a lot of people. Here are some for you to consider.
Remember that natural cures for anxiety aren't instant cures. It may take a little time to
realize their full benefit.
Anxiety Cure Tip 1
Learn and practice the relaxation response. If anything is characteristic of
our culture today it's a tendency for people to be on "high alert" constantly. There never seems to be any
downtime. A body responds to this stress by releasing chemicals and Euro transmitters that make anxiety much worse.
The relaxation response is a normal physiologic response that is the antidote to this.
You'll find more details about it and instructions on exactly how to do it on the page:

Anxiety Self-Help Tip 2
Another way to bring yourself back into balance is to avoid stimulants, both physical
and mental. Caffeine, sugars, and highly refined foods all act as physical stimulants. It's probably not a
coincidence that as these have become more prominent in our diets anxiety problems have become more prominent as
well.
You know that avoiding sweets, junk food, fast food, and highly processed foods is good for your
physical health. It will also be good for your emotional and mental health.
Caffeine is a well recognized stimulant. Even if you've become so used to having caffeine in
your system that you no longer notice its effect, it's still there. Avoid coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks,
at least until you have your anxiety well under control.
Curing Anxiety Naturally Tip 3
Avoid negative mental input. Our thoughts are powerful things, and we do have
control over them. Unfortunately, too many people don't actively control their thoughts but rather think in
response to what they see around them.
Most people know better than to read a Stephen King novel just before going to bed when they're
alone in an isolated house on a dark and stormy night. However they do the equivalent in their day-to-day life
without thinking about.
The media is a big culprit here. Despite what they claim, their mission isn't to keep us
informed is to attract readers and viewers and listeners. To do that, they look for the most dramatic stories that
they can find anywhere on the globe and they make things as sensationalistic as possible. Many more good things
than bad happened on a given day but I never reported.
If you're suffering from anxiety, I highly recommend that you try the experiment of avoiding any
form of media news whatsoever for two weeks. Instead, use whatever time you spend reading newspaper a watching a
news broadcast reading inspiring book or looking at an uplifting movie. You'll find that this will facilitate a
dramatic shift in your mental focus. In fact, many people who try this experiment never go back to watching the
news again.
That's a good thing.
Natural Anxiety Cure Tip 4
As an extension of the recommendation to avoid negative input, the next tip is to take
active control of your thoughts. Think the thoughts you want to think, not the ones that become a
habit.
We all have an inner dialog going on in our mind all day
everyday. Some psychologists refer to this as "self talk". Because it's automatic and in the background and
constant we might not even be aware of it unless we start to pay attention. I recommend that you do and knows
just what the content of your self talk is.
Many people with anxiety discover that they have a continual stream of negative and
anxiety-provoking thoughts running continuously. As you might expect, this only aggravates any tendency toward
anxiety.
Controlling your inner dialog may take some effort at first but it is possible. You can't do it
by pushing against the negative thoughts. Rather, the key is to replace them with positive thoughts.
For many people the simplest way is to use positive affirmations. That is positive statements of
what you want stated in the present tense. For example: "I am calm, relaxed and effective as I move through my
day."
Natural Anxiety Treatment Tip 5
Find out about cognitive restructuring. While the subject is too big to go into much detail
about it here, I highly recommend that you learn the techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy and cognitive
restructuring. These therapies have been extremely well researched and have proven to be some of the most effective
psychological treatments yet developed, especially for depression and anxiety.
The premise of these therapies is that we don't experience the world directly. Rather we
perceive through a series of psychological filters, which often distorted. Much emotional distress comes from these
distorted perceptions. When the distortion is cleared up, the distress goes away.
Clearing the distortion is what cognitive restructuring is about. A good resource to learn more
is the chapters on this in The Wellness Book by Dr. Herbert Benson.
There are other natural treatments for anxiety as well, but I think the tips I've outlined here
will get you off to a good start.
